Outdoor Adventures on the James River
The James River is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Known for its abundant fish population—over 70 species—you can cast a line for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, channel catfish, walleye, and more. Seasonal runs of spoonbill (March) and white bass (late March–mid-April) make for especially exciting catches.
We also offer daily kayak rentals, and several canoe outfitters are just blocks away from our property. Prefer a relaxing float or swim? The river is perfect for both.

Shoalnook is full of surprises for nature lovers. Spend time birdwatching—you might even spot a bald eagle—or explore nearby caves (always with property owner permission). As a rock collector’s paradise, our riverbank has revealed fossils, unique stones, and even arrowheads.
